Tree Brewing Hefeweizen

Tree Brewing Hefeweizen
Type of beer: Hefeweizen
Container Type: 650 mL bottle
Alcohol by volume: 5.00%
Country of origin: Canada
Rating: 70% (see below)
Number of times I've had this beer: 1st
Drank From: Bears
website: http://www.treebeer.com/
Best for: Dreaming
Ratings:
Taste: 13/20
Flavour: 14/20
Buy again: 15/20
Aroma: 7/10
Satisfaction: 8/10
Complexity: 7/10
Intangible: 7/10
Handwritten notes: A somewhat standard heffer, much less abrasive than I would have expected. The label points to banana and clove flavours, but I taste a predominant anise/black licorice flavour. Smooth. Smooth move, ex-lax. Remember that shit? What the Funk & Wagnalls does that mean? Anyways, they should make laxatives that taste like this beer. If they did, I'd never be off the shitter. And was there really a guy named John Crapper? Ahh, that's for another time.

Aroma: 5/10
Satisfaction: 3/10
Complexity: 5/10
Intangible: 2/10
Handwritten notes: The can says "The taste of cottage country". I'm not sure, but I think that means it tastes like a public bathroom and Muskol. There's only a cinna-mini stick hint to tell me it's a weizen. It pours crystal clear which is kind of sickening. How come everybody in Winnipeg just says "I'm going to the lake". There's like 20,000 lakes (no exaggeration) within 3 hours drive yet everyone just says "the lake". Fuck it, I'll be downtown refereeing bum fights in some greasy grey back alley. Enjoy your nature, jerks.

Handwritten notes: (How old is this review? Over a year and a half I think. The bottle is covered in dust. I remember the spring of 2010... not really)

A strong-ass banana "naner sammij" flavour, but a wheaty-bitter finish like I've never had. It's not a citrus finish, there's no lemon or orange in this one. Nor does there appear to be any coriander, fennel, cumin, cardamom, saffron, or nutmeg. Did you know you can get real messed up on nutmeg? Look it up people. Whatever that means, this is a refreshing take on the usual whites. All white people look alike to me, anyways.

Handwritten notes: 'scuse me while I drink this guy!! I do love raspberries in real life and I have an equal "dis-love" for fruit beers. Are these for girls? I don't get the market. Anyhoo, I was wondering what the heck purple has to do with raspberry. However, the raspberry taste is quite faint and (I can't believe I'm saying this) actually tastes purple. One time in my first year of University I was in a class called "enjoyment of music" and the teacher would play a record (yes, an actual LP) then, at the end of the song ask the class if they had any "colour sensations" listening to it. How the fuck does Bach sound orange? I quit the class after 2 weeks, as I did not begin smoking marijuana until a year later. Even so.

Drank From: Bit glass
Label Reads: "Hazy and Golden in color, this brew is a fresh twist on the popular Hefeweizen style. Eureka and Lisbon lemons, from three growing regions in California, balance out the wheat malt character, resulting in a crisp and refreshing wheat ale with subtle lemon flavor. Cheers!"

Handwritten notes: I don't know, Sammy. You say lemon but all I taste is banana. I like hefes once in a while to act as a sort of beer sorbet, clearing the palate of power-hungry IPAs and stouts. I'm not sure about this influx of white/wheat beers. I'm sure as hell not thinking about wheat ale in the shower on Monday morning. IPA maybe, but not wheat ale. It's like Mountain Dew making all these crazy flavours, being branded as exciting and new. So what? I'm not going to drink any of that crap.

Tasted on: 6/8/10
Colours of label: Orange/Yellow/Tan
Drank From: HP Glass
Label Reads: "Handcrafted in Shiner, Texas since 1909 the little brewery has been the source of every drop of shiner brew. Distinctive flavors brighten every sip of this wheat ale as it's brewed with a hint of clover, honey, and orange and lemon peels".
website: www.shiner.com

Handwritten notes: Why do I like this beer? I can't really say. It leaves spotty yeast-marks at the bottom of my glass. It refreshes like a tall glass of lemonade after mowing the lawn. It's definitely one of the best hefe's I've ever had. It doesn't taste like chewed up wheat, it doesn't punch you in the junk with unnecessary flavours. It is neither over-achiever, nor under-achiever. It simply is. Wow. I've never done a Shiner beer before, and I can't wait to see what else these fools have up their sleeves. Bra-frickin-vo.

Handwritten notes: A lovely change of pace from the usual winter fare. I haven't had a weizen in a while, and a bitter-ass night is as good a time as any. The taste is a standard weiss, though, an orangey and bready taste, but with a nice bitter finish that I wasn't expecting. Pretty nice for a -38° Celsius night.

Label Reads: "Brewed according to the German purity law of 1516", "Original Bottle fermentation", "From Bavaria's oldest brewery. Considered the classical German Hefe-Weizen. Classic bottle fermentation. Unpasteurized, unfiltered, with a pure top fermenting yeast that resettles on the bottom. Distinctive amber colour with a fine full head and a fresh bouquet. A light but firm body with plenty of champagne - like carbonation. Wonderfully refreshing".

Buy again: 16/20
Aroma: 10/10
Satisfaction: 9/10
Complexity: 9/10
Intangible: 9/10
Handwritten notes: A solid nutmeg and light caramel taste with a faint hint of coffee on top of the wheat flavours. The balance and complexity is played perfectly. It is warming, like a higher ABV (confirmed). What is that smell? I have this scent memory from somewhere. For some reason I remember an old 19th Century plow-shed, abandoned in the middle of the wilderness of a country field, green moss overgrown on its sides and wood-shingled roof. The aroma of rotten spruce and wheat unscythed for a hundred years surrounds me. Whether this actually happened or not, who cares? Thank you, Schneider Weisse.

Label Reads: "Beer brewed with pumpkin and spices", "In our pursuit to bring you the most flavourful and unique beers possible, we are proud to release this tasty autumn ale. Handcrafted with an assortment of specialty malts and hops, we added a generous amount of pumpkin directly into the brew. Combine this with hints of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and allspice, and you’ve got a beer that you won’t soon forget. Rich, satisfying and slightly spicy, our seasonal ale goes perfectly with your favourite dessert or traditional feast. But like fall, Pumpkin Ale comes but once a year!".

Handwritten notes: I hear a lot of people talk about Pumpkin beers, and I've never laid lips on one, so I was hyped to see this puppy wrapped in orange foil at the LC. It's not really what I expected, though. I expected to have a mouthful of pumpkin pie. (Should Unibroue have made this beer, I certainly would have had just that). Instead this is a consummate weiss with a sour sort of genuine pumpkin taste, and a hint of clove. Autumnal as hell, which is fine by me. How come Autumn is the only season that has two names? It's Autumn and fall. That's right, I gots me some thinkins.

Handwritten notes: I sipped this beer and had a revelation on life. Hear me out. I sipped it, and said to the wife: "this tastes like Tang". Then my brain started to work. It was like a slow-motion old 1950s comedy show. Tang. Tangerine. Is the drink "Tang" is named after "Tangerine"?? For all of these years... wha... here I am 31 years, 8 months into my life and just realizing that "Tang" stands for "Tangerine"??? Good fucking gracious. But it's true folks, and if I've spared you a little embarrassment, then mission accomplished. However, this beer tastes like the watered down old Tang you used to get from a big Orange cooler in your school gymnasium. Not s'good.

I'm just filling the air with words while everyone looks at the pretty pictures. Ah... this beer is fresh, but artificially so. It's like dating a chick who wears a ton of makeup. Handwritten notes: I'm not sure I'm a big fan of this fruit beer business. I'm a sot, not a flippin' green grocer. This tastes like grapefruit juice. Any beer flavour is beaten down with a billy-club on the side of the road after a routine traffic stop. If you like grapefruit juice, you'll like this beer. This is perhaps the Aristotelian first-mover or prime cause in terms of Heffe-Weizens. That last sentence cost me $10,000 in tuition. But this beer is worth the cost, unlike a philosophy degree. A summery beer without being a bland quencher of thirst.

Chalky's Bite

Chalky's Bite
Type of beer: Hefe-Weizen(?)
Container Type: 330 mL bottle
Alcohol by volume: 6.8%
Country of origin: England
Rating: 79% (see below)
Number of times I've had this beer: 1st
Cost: $3.50
Tasted on: 7/11/09
Colours of label: Blue/White/Gold
Drank From: Glass
Label Reads: "The idea for Chalky's bite came about as a challenge from Rick Stein to Sharp's Head Brewer Stuart Howe. The task was to create a distinctly English beer with the character, individuality and quality to stand alongside the Belgian greats. The beer created is exceptional with a delicate flavour balance of three different hop varieties and wild Cornish fennel. With a totally natural process and a maturation period of over three months the beer is allowed ample time to develop a high level of carbonation, its own distinctive flavour and a beautiful light golden colour. Chalky's patience whilst attending the many development and sampling sessions at the Brewery is justifiably rewarded in the name."

Intangible: 8/10
Handwritten notes: This beer is almost like a strong apple cider in its acidity. There is a sour/sweet acid that plays the other flavours like a fiddle and gives it a hugely unique character. It is interesting and surprisingly refreshing, considering its ABV. The back story for the beer is incredibly dull. However, if you make a beer this good you can call it "yo momma" if you want, and I'll still drink it.

Reminds me of tooling down some dusty backroad with my grandparents, ice cream buckets in hand, off to pick Saskatoon berries. My grandpa couldn't remember my name most days, but he took us down some winding highway, this way and that, to where he knew there were great Saskatoon berries 30 years ago. Amazing. Handwritten notes: This beer tastes very sweet. This Leinie business is either a summertime-only company or a company that brews for girls with no taste buds. This is a sickly sweet taste of sunshine in your mouth. It tastes like summer, but a summer where you have to work all the time and you barely get outside and then, what the fuck, it's September already??? And then you cry a little for the wasted time and you mourn another summer with nothing to show for it but another inch on your waistline and a cigar burn in your living room rug. C'est la vie. This is one of the worst honey beers I've had in that it actually tastes like honey. Besides bees, who the fuck wants to drink that?

Handwritten notes: when I was in my early to mid twenties I would sometimes over-do the beer thing, usually with one or several of my brothers. Sometimes my old lady would try to join us, and she would have half a bottle of Arbor Mist (gross girly sparkling wine). That, being enough for a reasonable person, would be it for her, and she would go to bed. I would stay awake until my eyes forced themselves shut against my will. More times than I can remember I would stumble out in the middle of the night (or mid-morning, as it would be by then), open the fridge, and take a swing out of this leftover half-bottle of this Arbor Mist garbage, with all of the beer having been shotgunned or lost the previous night in a game of caps. That is what Leinie Berry tastes like. The sickening smack of beer on your lips, and the sickening pong of berry in your nose and throat. Prosit!

I was alive then. Truly alive. However, it is not beer, and this is not the lemonade project (coming soon?).

Handwritten notes: (I nearly forgot about this one - I split the bottle with big fella and left the notes in the crevasse of my couch for 2 weeks). A very light tasting wheat beer, very good at what it does, but what it does is not that astonishing... very summery, and easy to drink, but leaves you feeling a little empty.
